By default, a Website Release will display a navigation that is generated automatically based on the structure of the "Content" panel in the release. However, you may choose to enable custom navigation via the "Navigation" panel of a release for finer-grained control.
Custom navigation provides additional capabilities relative to the default navigation style, including a traversable menu layout that supports nesting of navigation items up to six levels deep and an option to add navigation links pointing to external URLs.
However, it is important to note that, when custom navigation is enabled, you must add or remove navigation items manually when adding or removing the corresponding Title/Media objects from the "Content" panel of the release.
Configuration
To enable custom navigation for a Website Release, visit the “Navigation” panel within the Release and activate the toggle switch labeled “Enable custom navigation.”
In the left column, the “Navigation Items” section displays the hierarchical structure of navigation links that will be included in the published release. In the right column, the “Release Content” and “Custom Link” sections represent the available sources for new navigation items.
To add a Media or Title item to the Navigation Items, click the “Add” button adjacent to its label in the Release Content area. To add a link to an external URL, complete the fields in the Custom Link section at the bottom of the Release Content section and click “Add” (see “Custom Links” below for details).
Change the order of navigation items by clicking and dragging on the “sort” icon (three horizontal lines). Click the “delete” (trash can) icon to remove from the Navigation Items.
You can nest Navigation Items below other items by dragging to the right — nested items appear indented as shown in the image below. Nesting navigation items in this way creates a browsable hierarchy within your published release’s navigation.
Navigation Item Options
You can customize the label text or URL slug (a text fragment that appears in the URL, once the release is published) of individual Navigation Items if the default values are not desirable. For “Custom Link” items, you can also change the link’s destination URL.
To adjust these options, click the disclosure triangle icon on the left of a navigation item, and edit the text fields as needed.
Use the “Expand all” and “Collapse all” shortcut links to quickly show or hide options fields for all Navigation Items.
Custom Links
Using the “Custom Link” form in the right column, you can add a link pointing to an external URL to your release’s navigation. Enter the label text and target URL in the fields provided, and click “Add.” Custom links can appear anywhere in the hierarchy of navigation items.
It is also possible to add a custom link with no URL specified (simply enter label text, and leave the URL field blank). This creates a navigation item that can be used as a “container” for nested child items. When a user clicks on such a navigation item in your published release, it will have the effect of exposing the child items without actually navigating to a different page within the release.
Reset Custom Navigation
You can reset the custom navigation configuration by deleting any existing custom navigation items and saving the Release. Custom navigation items will be regenerated based on the structure of the Sections, Titles, and Media included in the Release. (Please note that any Release items that have their “Include in section navigation” option unchecked in the Content panel will not be included in the resulting custom navigation configuration.)
This reset process can provide a useful starting point for further customization.
Expanded or Compact Navigation for Website releases
Top-level navigation for Website Releases can be set to either Expanded or Compact view.
Expanded view displays navigation items in a horizontal list with vertical fly outs.
With this setting, website navigation items will display horizontally below the header area and above the content of your page.
If the navigation item contains sub-items, those will open into a vertical list beneath the top-level item.
If the sub-items contain additional items, an arrow will appear to the right that when clicked, toggles the list to those items.
Compact view will display a single item as top-level navigation beneath the header area that opens a list view containing sub-items.
If the sub-items contain additional items, an arrow will appear to the right that when clicked, toggles the list to those items.
Setting Expanded or Compact Navigation
In order to set Expanded or Compact navigation view, you must select to use Custom Navigation for your Website Release.
Navigate to your Releases using the Releases button on the left of the Platform interface.
Find your Release from the list and then click to open the Navigation tab.
Then click to enable the Custom Navigation slider.
Once this is selected, custom navigation options will appear on the right side of the interface.
Choose the navigation display you prefer - Compact or Expanded - using the check box under Navigation Style.
Make sure to click the Save Button.
The changes made will appear after the next time the Website Release is published.
