Use the Pin Map title to visualize geographic data on a map. A Pin Map title contains markers and overlays with text that can be combined with media. Users can navigate by clicking map items in the menu or by clicking markers on the map. A published Pin Map title contains the following elements:
- Base map: Interactive map layer used to display geographic locations
- Markers: Used for pinpointing data to a specific location on the base map
- Overlay: Displays packaged media and text
- Country Layers: Used for highlighting regions
- Navigation Menu: An hierarchical list (Map Items and Categories) and used to navigate points on a map
- Legend: An illustrated list of map symbols
Build a Map
A Pin Map is built by creating map items. Map items can be either points (displayed as Markers) or countries. Map items can be grouped and arranged into categories that are viewed in navigation menu.

To build a map click the “NEW TITLE” button, the Pin Map button, name the title and click the “CREATE” button:
Enter general information and title description
Under the GENERAL tab enter the following:
- Short Description: Used in social media releases and meta tags
- Long Description: Displayed on the website - above the left navigation menu
- Mapbox access token: Mapbox tools require a Mapbox access token. Learn More.
- Mapbox Style URL: The style URL allows you to reference that specific style for a Mapbox basemap. Learn More.
Click SAVE and continue to the CATEGORIES & LEGEND tab.
Create map Categories and Marker Types
USE the “CATEGORIES & LEGEND” tab to create Categories and Marker Types for a map. Categories control the organization of map items in the published map’s navigation menu. Marker Types determine the symbols used to represent map items and may optionally be listed in the map legend.
- Add categories to map
Click the Add Category button to create categories to the map. Categories control the organization of map items in the published map’s navigation menu. Use the “Edit” icon to modify the category name. - Add marker types to map
Click add marker type to create markers for the map. Marker types control the symbols used to represent map items and may optionally be listed in the map legend. Use the “Edit” icon to open the marker type overlay to include a custom image for the maker type. - Show map legend option
Click the “Show Legend” checkbox to enable the map legend overlay.
Click SAVE and continue to the MAP ITEMS tab.
Create Map Items
Use the “MAP ITEMS” tab to populate the map with geolocated text and media content.
- Click the “Add New Item” button to add items to the map.
- Edit the following item details:
- Name: Display name for the map item
- URL Slug: URL-friendly version of the item name containing only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens
- Description: Text shown in the overlay
- Category: Category where item will appear in navigation menu. Items can appear in multiple categories
- Location type: Choose “Point” to place a marker on the map or “Countries” to select countries to highlight
- Location: For “Point” locations, click on the map to set location, or enter coordinates in the Latitude and Longitude fields
- Countries: For “Country” locations, choose countries from the list of countries
- Marker: Select the marker type from the menu that was created in the Categories and Legend tab
- Media: Attach media to the Map Item
Save your map and add it to a release to publish.
Release Preview
To preview a pin map title as it would appear when published in a standard Player Release, navigate to the "Preview" panel.
